Stirling is one of Scotland’s unsung cities. And yet it has played a major role in everything from nation-defining battles to Monty Python sketches.

I visited last month to check out what there is to see and do here for the Sunday Times’ Great British Breaks series. I watched red kites feeding, pitched into virtual battle at Bannockburn and stood atop the ramparts of Stirling Castle. I also stayed a night at Andy Murray’s wonderful Cromlix Hotel.
