“My husband and I binge-watched The Crown in lockdown 2.0, so I’ve become a big fan of the royals, which means the place I’m most excited to visit on the Isle of Wight is Osborne House, the beloved holiday home of Queen Victoria. As we arrive at the door with our one-year-old daughter, a chatty guide approaches and says: “Once upon a time, a young couple turned up here and just fell in love with the place. So they bought it.” She is talking, of course, about Victoria and Albert.”
Every year throughout my childhood, my family spent a week on the Isle of Wight. We stayed at a holiday camp near Yarmouth, called the Savoy Holiday and Country Club, and we made wonderful memories of not only walking out to the Needles and roaming the rooms of Queen Victoria’s holiday home, but also of silly games and family dances. My memories of those holidays are some of my most precious and I am always over the moon to board the Wightlink ferry to the island.
And so I was delighted to sail over to Yarmouth recently to write a feature about how glorious the island is for Fabulous magazine. Once covid is also just a memory my family and I will be back.
