“From woodland walks to coastal hotels and family adventures”

I’ve always thought that autumn is the best time to travel around the UK, getting cosy by the fire in rural pubs, stomping through the leaves in forests shaded russet and gold, and wandering quiet city streets devoid of their summer crowds.

So the challenge when I was asked by the Times to pull together 25 of the best UK autumn breaks was: what could I bear to leave out? I’d have loved to include so many places that are currently under stricter lockdown measures, along with numerous hotels, pubs and B&Bs I’ve discovered over the years that space simply wouldn’t allow.

What I could do, though, was share some of my absolute favourites, such as glorious Lucknam Park in my home county of Wiltshire (pictured), the wonderful family-focused hotel in Perthshire I’ve just returned from, and the gorgeous thatched cottage I’m seriously tempted to hole up in this winter in the New Forest.
